The Length of a Board Game

How long is a good board game? About the same length of a piece of string I think!

This week we are discussing the length of games, and the impact that has on a persons experience and enjoyment. We both tend to favour shorter games (less than two hours) but with one of our favourite games being the exception we speculate on what makes those longer games appealing?

We also discuss the someone shorter games we have been playing this week including Herbaceous, Incan Gold, Qwirkle, The Mind, Skull King and give our first impressions of Zoomaka - a game that we received a review copy of this week.

There is still time to enter our 'Guess that board game sound' competition - just submit your answer on any of our social media pages or in the comments below!

  1. I'm in a similar position to yours, except my long game is Firefly rather than Battlestar.

I think that there's something like a "fun per time" or "fun density" calculation for games. Is that two-hour game really twice as much fun as two one-hour games? Sometimes it is, but not always.

Also, as you mentioned, a game that's not much fun for the person who's losing is OK for 30 or 60 minutes, not so great if you have to wait three hours before you get to do something interesting again. Some games let you have fun even when you're not winning; I feel this way about Firefly though I know not everyone agrees. Depends on the player too.

(And if you can come from behind to win in the last round, what was the point of playing all the previous rounds?)

I'll set up a boardgamegeek guild for BGIB if you fancy it…

    1. I've never had a chance to play firefly but I would like to! I think my enjoyment of a game isn't that strongly tied to whether I am winning or not so it doesn't bother me too much.

You are more than welcome to set up a BGiB guild for us, I will try and post in there but I worry we wouldn't get a huge amount of engagement there- much more popular podcasts than us struggle there!
